‘Time to pass the torch’: Adam Schiff joins growing list of Democrats urging Joe Biden to step down from 2024 race to White House

NEW DELHI: Representative Adam Schiff (Democrat-California) on Wednesday joined a growing number of Democratic members of Congress in urging President Joe Biden to forgo his 2024 re-election bid. Schiff, who is currently running for a Senate seat, emphasised the critical juncture the nation finds itself in and expressed concerns about Biden’s ability to secure a victory over Donald Trump in the upcoming election.

In a private meeting with donors, Schiff warned that if Biden remained at the top of the ticket, not only would he lose to Trump, but he could also be enough of a drag on other Democratic candidates that the party would most likely lose the Senate and miss an opportunity to win control of the House.

“While the choice to withdraw from the campaign is President Biden’s alone, I believe it is time for him to pass the torch. And in doing so, secure his legacy of leadership by allowing us to defeat Donald Trump in the upcoming election,” said Schiff.

Schiff’s remarks underscore the depth of the concerns in the president’s party about the prospects for downballot Democrats if Biden remains in the race.

Schiff highlighted Biden’s significant contributions to the country throughout his political career but underscored the necessity for a different approach to prevent a second Trump presidency, which he believes would pose a severe threat to democracy.

The California Democrat suggested that it might be time for Biden to step aside and pass the leadership torch to ensure triumph over Trump in the election.

While acknowledging that the decision to withdraw from the campaign ultimately rests with President Biden, Schiff emphasized the paramount importance of defeating Trump in the upcoming election. He pledged his full support to the Democratic nominee, whether it be Biden or another candidate, emphasizing the overarching goal of thwarting Donald Trump’s return to power.

Schiff’s recent comments echo his earlier sentiments expressed during an interview, where he criticized Biden’s performance, stating that the President should be outperforming Trump.

The congressman’s stance underscores the urgency and significance of the impending election in safeguarding the nation’s democratic principles.
